Solution—Land based gas turbine engine combustor cases
Land-based gas turbine engines use combustion technology to convert fuel into energy. The combustor cases traditionally were machined forgings with additional features welded in place. By adopting MetalTek’s net shape centrifugal casting capability a significant customer was able to replace the complex fabricated part with a single piece centrifugal shape. This eliminated multiple vendors, additional welding operations, redundant operations like post-weld heat treat, and added to the integrity of the product.
Solution—Net shape cases
Cases for critical jet engine applications typically consist of forgings which require extensive machining of excess material to yield the finished part. To reduce the machining need, MetalTek developed net-shaping, a hybrid of investment and centrifugal processes. This product saves as much as 80% of the cost of machining per part. The cost to pour additional pounds of expensive exotic alloys can be avoided, and the quality of the rough part is improved.
Solution— Outer band castings rough machined
Investment castings were often selected for outer band engine applications, but those products are subject to high scrap rates because they are not weld repairable. By supplying rough machined centrifugal castings with their inherent quality in those applications, MetalTek has been able to reduce the total cost radically. Due to the speed of rough machining, up to 50% of the total product cost is avoided. In addition, finished machining cost is reduced because that machining is performed on an already machined surface, and not an as-cast surface.
