HY-80 Steel

MetalTek is Certified to Produce HY-80 Metal Castings

MetalTek’s Carondelet Division is certified to produce HY-80 metal castings up to 8 inches in thickness to Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) Technical Publication T9074.  Carondelet is one of few manufacturers to offer HY-80 using the sand casting process.

What Is HY-80 Steel?

HY-80 is a high-performance, low alloy steel that includes small amounts of nickel and chromium.  HY-80 is known for its combination of strength and toughness.  It derives its name from its minimum yield strength of 80,000 pounds per square inch (psi).  Manufacturers must be independently certified in HY-80 production.

The properties of HY-80 make it ideal for the naval defense market, including submarines and surface ships.  HY-80’s high strength-to-weight ratio and toughness make it a good fit for structural applications, and its weldability allows the fabrication of complex structures and assemblies.  While not a corrosion resistant as stainless steel, HY-80 stands up to the corrosive effects of saltwater.

What Are The Benefits Of HY-80?

Benefits of HY-80 include:

  • High strength: HY-80 has exceptional strength, with a minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi.  This high strength allows it to withstand heavy loads without permanent deformation.

  • Toughness: HY-80 absorbs energy and without fracturing, critical for applications subject to dynamic loading and impact such as naval vessels.

  • Weldability: HY-80 offers good weldability, allowing for the fabrication of complex structures and assemblies without sacrificing its strong mechanical properties.

  • Corrosion resistance: Although not as corrosion resistant as stainless steel, HY-80 exhibits good resistance to corrosion, including saltwater environments.
