Case Study: Casting and Machining of Steel Roll Shell

Sandusky International manufactured this featured steel roll shell for a papermaking industry application. Working with ASTM A27 grade N-1 carbon steel, we determined our manufacturing process based on our customer supplied specification. We began by casting the roll shell to rough dimensions; heat treated the component and then cleaned the roll shell.

The second phase of manufacturing involved rough turning the outside diameter, rough boring the inside diameter and cutting the length to meet the specific size. Upon completion, the steel roll shell measured 38.5 inches in outside diameter, 33.5 inches in inside diameter, and 192 inches in length. After inspection to ensure we had met and surpassed our client's expectations, we delivered the steel roll to our North American papermaking machinery OEM client.
